Our hometown has a rich history – named from Old English meaning "oat hill" or "goat hill" – and while the Great Fire of 1667 destroyed most historical buildings, we're proud to maintain the roofs on properties ranging from Victorian terraces near Queen Street to the few surviving historic buildings like the Grade II* listed Anne of Cleves House.

Haverhill's housing tells the story of how the town grew. The post-war years brought waves of London overspill housing – the council-built terraces and semis around Parkway and Clements, then the larger Chalkstone estates of the 1960s and 70s – much of it roofed in the concrete interlocking tiles that were standard at the time. A great many of those roofs are now reaching the end of their service life all at once, which is why we see so many ageing-concrete-tile re-roofs in these neighbourhoods: tiles going porous and laminating, nail-sickness loosening the lower courses, and bedding mortar on ridges and hips crumbling after fifty-odd winters. Ringing the older estates are the newer developments – the Arboretum, Boyton Place, the Parklands and the homes off Brickfields Drive – with modern interlocking tiles, dry-fix ridges and the occasional finishing fault that surfaces once a roof has weathered a few seasons.

Each part of town brings its own roofing problems. On the higher, more exposed ground to the west and north, ridge lines and verges take a real battering from the wind, and it's often the mortar and the ridge fixings that fail first. On the Victorian and Edwardian terraces nearer the centre, the recurring jobs are blocked or undersized valleys between adjoining roofs, slipped slates, and tired chimney flashings where lead has split or pulled away from the stack. Flat roofs over the many 1960s–70s extensions, garages and porches are another constant – felt that has blistered, split at the upstands or started to pond. Damp patches on bedroom ceilings, debris in the gutters and daylight showing through a loft are the usual early warnings, and on the terraces it's often a shared valley or a party-wall flashing that lets two houses down at once. Whatever the property, the underlying issue is usually a small detail left too long rather than a roof that has truly failed, and catching it early keeps the cost down and saves the ceilings and timbers underneath.
